Reinhold Joest succeeded in mounting the winners’ rostrum as a sportscar driver himself at Le Mans. However, his team, established in 1978, celebrated even greater achievements. In the 1980s and 90s, Joest Racing set the standards in sportscar racing. The team won the long distance classics at Daytona, the Nürburgring, Le Mans, Sebring and Road Atlanta. The Supercup, the Interseries, and the American Le Mans Series. The excursion into touring car racing was crowned by success: Joest Racing won the International Touring Car Championship (ITC) in 1996. Joest Racing has been a partner of Audi Sport since 1998. Audi scored a podium finish on its Le Mans début in 1999 with the Audi R8R. In 2000, 2001 and 2002 Audi Sport Team Joest won convincingly at Le Mans – and brought every R8 competing in the race to the finish in the top three positions. The team from the Odenwald region in Germany also won the American Le Mans Series four times in succession. Reinhold Joest’s team was integrated in the development of new sportcars from the very beginning. "We were always more than just a pure race team,” says Team Director Reinhold Joest. "Our partners have always benefited from our input and know-how.” In Ralf Jüttner, the team has one of the most experienced engineers in the sportscar scene. A project proved to be successful right from the start was the Audi R10 TDI: The revolutionary diesel sports car remained unbeaten in its first season winning the Le Mans 24 Hours, the 12 Hours of Sebring and the American Le Mans Series. In 2007 the R10 TDI repeated this triple. In its third year, the R10 TDI keeps its course on victory lane. In Sebring, it was the best LM P1 prototype and in Le Mans, the diesel sportscar remained unbeaten in 2008 once again. The remarkable success was achieved after a tough battle lasting 24 hours of winners Tom Kristensen, Dindo Capello and Allan McNish with local hero Peugeot. In the 2008 European Le Mans Series, Audi and Joest Racing prevailed against their rivals from France as well. The title was won by Alexandre Prémat and Mike Rockenfeller. In 2009, Audi took the next big step in terms of using diesel technology in motorsport: the R15 TDI was the world’s first second-generation diesel-powered prototype. Audi and Joest Racing entered the LMP1 sportscar at Sebring and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 2010 a revised R15 TDI achieved a 1-2-3 win at Le Mans, the fourth for Audi Sport Team Joest after 2000, 2002 und 2004. |
